The problem

Why agencies cannot grow

Not for lack of effort. Four things have to connect, and they almost never do.

01

The market is assumed, not chosen

Growth work starts from a list before anyone has decided who is worth talking to. Most agencies describe their market by the clients they have won. That is a record of the past. It is not a decision about the future, and a list built from it inherits every accident in it.

02

The hook is a pitch

Agencies lead with what they sell. The prospect is not ready to buy, so the message asks for something they have no reason to give. Nobody wants a pitch. Some people want to know what is wrong with their account.

03

Lead generation is bought in isolation

A supplier who has never sat in one of your pitches writes the message that is meant to get you the pitch. They do not know which clients you want, what you are good at, or what the first call sounds like. The volume arrives. The fit does not.

04

There is no one to close

Meetings land on a founder already running delivery. Follow up is slow and the pipeline quietly rots. This is the most expensive failure, because it happens after everything else has worked.

05

Nobody owns the whole thing

Four suppliers, four scorecards, nobody accountable for a signed client. Every part can hit its number while the agency grows by nothing.

One problem, not five

Each of these looks like its own problem, so agencies buy a fix for each one. The fixes do not talk to each other. It is one problem, and it breaks where the parts meet.
